"Exploring methods of developing a knowledge-based economy through knowledge, innovation and business dynamism creating wealth and employment while preserving the quality of the environment."

The aim:
The European Union is still lagging behind its main competitors in terms of investment and performance, and most regions are engaging towards the knowledge-based economy, finding ways of modernising traditional industries while securing future ones. The traditional industries need to add value to their products and services through knowledge and technology and new high growth knowledge-based companies need to be encouraged to start and to grow. The European Union has a genuine world-class university and research base, but particularly in comparison to the US, its ability to translate IP into commercial enterprises is relatively poor. The aim of this theme is to explore methods of creating wealth, in a sustainable and environmentally-friendly context, through the development of a knowledge-based economy.
